Small Changes = Better You In 2018
Julie Christoffer, CHHC
When we think of ringing in the New Year, we also think about the resolutions we should make. “What can I improve?” or “How can I become a better version of myself?” are questions we may ask ourselves. For many of us, finding better physical health is at the top of our list. While we may greatly desire changes such as losing weight, improving our energy and feeling better, many of us find it difficult to stay committed to our goals for more than a few weeks.
If you fall into this category, don’t worry. 2018 can be YOUR year to transform your life and make changes that last. Losing weight is not a “food thing” or an “exercise thing.” Instead, it truly is a “MIND thing.” 90% of behavior change starts in our brain, and that is where the shift must occur. It’s easy to make promises to ourselves and not follow through, especially if the only person holding ourselves accountable is us. Change can feel overwhelming and when we are overwhelmed, we tend to do nothing or give up.
Luckily, there are strategies that can really make the difference in achieving goals around health, weight and fitness. Perhaps the most important is to set small goals that you can accomplish relatively easily. Begin by making a simple promise to yourself, such as drinking two glasses of water every day. Once this has successfully become part of your routine, make another promise, perhaps taking a daily ten-minute walk. Continue to add small promises and changes to your lifestyle. Each kept promise will improve your self-confidence and motivate you to the next. It is these small choices and changes that you make each day that build upon each other and that can really boost your self-esteem. You will be surprised where this practice will take you.
If you find yourself struggling with small changes, you may need to look outside yourself for accountability. As your health coach, I will not only provide accountability, but I will also support, guide and stretch you to meet each and every goal. Working with me is an investment, but investing in yourself is the first step in creating the life that you deserve. Don’t hesitate to start working on yourself and remember summer bodies are created in the winter. Let’s start accomplishing your goals together so you can be fit, strong and confident in 2018!
